
Fans by the roadside, often with booze on board, can go crazy when the riders pass. Sometimes it doesn't end well at all.
From taking selfies or even trying to kick the athletes as they go past, there has been some very odd and downright disgraceful fan behaviour at pro races down the years.
The fact the athletes compete on open roads with crowds by the roadside able to literally reach out and touch them means members of the pro peloton have hazards to negotiate that stars in other sports don't.
When you throw into the mix that some of those spectating are new to bike racing and perhaps don't appreciate the dangers, or have had too much to drink while waiting for the race to arrive; it's perhaps surprising that disaster doesn't strike more often.

The dangers posed by those taking selfies at races, with their backs to the passing riders, really became clear when last year's Tour de France started in Britain. The crowds were massive and many people got a bit carried away.
