With all the cold and wet weather in Ireland lately, here’s a video that will interest all of us. It’s a run through of some of the best destinations for warm weather training.
Training camps abroad were once the preserve of pro riders only and perhaps a handful of elite domestic racers. But nowadays cyclists who don’t even race regularly jet out for a week to get some miles in.
The weather is obviously the main draw. Who wouldn’t want to get out on the bike every day in the sunshine to get stronger, not to mention a suntan, when the elements are battering the roads of Ireland and the cyclists on them?
But depending on where you go, heading abroad with your bike in a group of friends or club mates can also provide a fantastic opportunity to ride all of those iconic climbs the pro riders fly up on the races like the Tour de France, Vuelta or Giro.
Getting up one of those has been the peak of many a leisure cyclist’s career and is a great goal to fix your sights on.
Stints of a week or 10 days offer a great opportunity for bonding and getting mentally prepared if a group of cyclists from the same club or team is preparing for the season ahead or focussed on a key goal, such as a major stage race.
But if you don’t race, trips abroad are definitely still for you.
They’ll get you fitter and you’ll get to know fellow riders better, especially if you normally don’t socialise with those you train with.
Foreign training trips will also get you in shape for the sportive season and indeed they will whet your appetite for perhaps riding some major non competitive events abroad.
And while most attractive at this time of year when it’s cold at home, training trips can be very enjoyable year round, even when the weather is good back home.
