Nike Terpstra of the Omega Pharma-Quickstep team found himself disqualified after the final stage of the Eneco Tour yesterday after a strange incident in which he shoulder-barged Maarten Wynants, before the Belkin rider barged him back, all unfolding while the duo were at the front of the bunch.
The Paris-Roubaix winner started the day in 7th place overall and his team went on to take the stage win on the day when Guillaume van Keirsbulck took victory out front alone before team mate Matteo Trentin took the sprint for 2nd and Julian Vermote took 4th.
However, Terpstra's disqualification took him out of the top 1o on the final standings in the WorldTour race and so saw him lose world ranking points.
“Everyone knows I have got lots of crazy energy," he said afterwards.
"It can run between charm and aggression, especially in the middle of a race situation. But I must ensure my energy does not turn into aggressive conduct on the bike that has the potential to harm others. Today I lost myself; I was out of character today.”
His behaviour was regarded as excessive and dangerous by the commissaires, who took him out of the final result as punishment.
