Saved by a crash barrier and some quick thinking spectators, José Joaquín Rojas took this really heavy fall on the Vuelta only to instinctively jump back to his feet and back onto his bike.
Saturday’s stage 8 of the Vuelta a Espana became a day of carnage when a number of crashes resulted in broken bones and riders abandoning.
Tejay van Garderen (BMC Racing), Dan Martin (Cannondale-Garmin), Nacer Bouhanni (Cofidis), and Kris Boeckmans (Lotto-Soudal) all abandoned after a crash with some 50km remaining to the stage finish in Murcia.
Race leader Esteban Chaves (Orica-GreenEdge) was caught up in the same crash but continued and finished on the same time as stage winner Jasper Stuyven (Trek Factory Racing).
And even Stuyven could not escape the drama; coming down in the same crash that claimed Dan Martin.
The Belgian was later diagnosed with a broken bone in his arm despite his stage win.
Another to come off was José Joaquín Rojas of Movistar.
He hit the deck very hard coming down a descent and slid across the road, cutting his body to shreds as he skimmed across the tarmac at high speed.
He was only stopped from flying off the road by a crash barrier and some quick thinking fans.
And despite his ordeal, he immediately jumped back to his feet and back on his bike; his desire to get right back into the action summing up how tough and dedicated these professional riders really are.
Have a look at his mishap in the clip below.
