This clip from inside Team Sky's car on Dutch Corner reveals a tirade of jeering, obscene hand gestures, missiles and drink being aimed at those inside.
Riders being abused by spectators from the roadside is unfortunately not new in professional cycling.
Stephen Roche felt the brunt of many Italian fans when he rode to victory in the 1987 Giro d'Italia while part of a Carrera team that contained home favourite and defending champion Roberto Visentini.
Eddy Merckx was punched while climbing the 1975 Tour on stage 14.
But the scenes on the roadside appear to be getting uglier and more abusive now.
Fans are camping on climbs, often for days on end, and consuming too much alcohol. The proliferation of cameras also catches more of the unsavoury moments.
Throw in some xenophobia, racism and fans' angry at those they perceive are doping and you have a dangerous mix.
Alpe d'Huez has always attracted the biggest and loudest crowds.
And the footage below, from inside one of Team Sky's vehicles, shows a very ugly reception at Dutch Corner, according to the team.
The footage clearly shows liquid being thrown at the vehicle, lots of obscene hand gestures, some banging on the vehicle and what looks and sounds like missiles - cups and cans - being thrown at the car.
It's very difficult to know how race owners ASO and the UCI can combat this sort of activity; on a mountain open to the public and packed from base to summit.
But it certainly looks like the time has come for some form of action before scenes like these overshadow the action in the peloton and perhaps lead to something tragic.
Soccer has had public awareness 'kick out racism' and 'respect' themed campaigns aimed at both those on the pitch and on the terraces.
That would seem like a good place for cycling to at least start.
