Video: Taoiseach now sounds less definite on timing of Irish velodrome

Taoiseach Irish velodrome

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar spoke about the long promised Irish velodrome in recent days. And he spoke about the same long-promised Irish velodrome back in January. Compare the two clips yourself and see what you think. We hope we're wrong.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar appears to have created wriggle room for himself over the new Irish velodrome he sounded much more certain about earlier this year.

Seven months ago Varadkar, then a Cabinet minister rather than Taoiseach, spoke about the long-promised Irish velodrome.

At the time he was at the opening of the new National Indoor Arena. It is on the National Sports Campus in Abbottstown, west Dublin.

“It’s the keystone of our sporting infrastructure up here on the campus," he said back then of the National Indoor Arena.

“There’s lots of other facilities here already. And the next step, of course, is the velodrome and covered training pitches for soccer and rugby. It’s a great project.”

In recent days Varadkar again spoke of the velodrome. He was back in Abbotstown and turning the sod on the next phase of the National Indoor Arena.

It contains those covered training pitches for soccer and rugby he spoke of in January.

Varadkar rattled through all of the sports that already had bases at the Abbottstown campus.

Then he said: “And after this (the second phase of the indoor arena) is done, hopefully we will get onto the next piece of work which is the velodrome and accommodation for athletes as well.”

Maybe we’re splitting hairs. But the Irish velodrome has become a long and sorry saga. In that context, this sounds like the groundwork for a further delay.

The new Taoiseach certainly struck a much more definite tone in his video six months ago. Hopefully he’ll prove us wrong though.
