FDJ ruder Steve Morabito suffered a dislocated shoulder on yesterday’s stage 2 of the Tour Down Under.

He suffered the painful injury in a crash. But rather than abandon he popped the dislocated shoulder back in.

Furthermore, he promptly got back on his bike and finished the stage. He trailed home in a small group almost 15 minutes down.

But he wasn’t last man on the road and he survived despite the injury.

He told reporters from cyclingnews and cyclingtips afterwards that he had popped the dislocated shoulder back in himself.

He explained the medics didn’t want to do it. And because he had fixed a dislocated shoulder a few times in the past he knew what to do.

All he needed was a little help from his team when disaster struck with 27km remaining.

“I grabbed my handlebar and some guys were keeping my bike straight,” he said.

“And I just pushed a little bit the shoulder and it came in. It was really painful before and when it’s come in it’s again OK.”

He said he crashed when he was off the back of the peloton looking for his team car to collect bottles.

He was looking back and the next thing he knew he was on the road having sustained the nasty injury in the fall.

Sam Bennett of Bora-hansgrohe is the only Irish rider in the Tour Down Under.

He is recovering from illness and finished towards the back of the field. Bennett was in 125th place and in the same group as Steve Morabito.

Caleb Ewan Mitchel-Scott won the 149km stage into Stirling. He also took the race lead.
