When a line of traffic cones appeared in the Rás peloton these riders showed expert bike handling skills to avoid them.

With the An Post Rás completed, the riders will be hoping the pounding their bodies have taken will bring on even better form.

But one area some of them don't need to improve is their bike handling skills, as this drone clip shows.

It was recorded by the excellent Raymond McCarron who has posted the clip on his YouTube account.

The action was filmed from the skies above the peloton on the N13 dual carriageway near Letterkenny, Co Donegal, on stage 4 last Wednesday.

The road was set out in a bid to keep traffic, including the riders, in the two inside lanes and keep the outside lane free.

However, as often happens in bike races, the bunch was spread across the road wider than the two designated lanes.

There were riders on both sides of the cones, and that means one thing; a line of cones being encountered by some of the riders very unexpectedly.

While the bulk of the bunch was unaffected, some of the Rás cyclists were very close to the cones and only appeared to see them when they were upon them.

However, they showed great bike skills to avoid crashing into them.

This snippet is just one example of the hidden hazards those in the Rás peloton encounter along the way.

You have to have the legs to survive, but you also have to be switched on and have your wits about you!
