Video: Granny breaches barriers with child; gets milled by crit rider

A pro rider ploughs into a granny and child as they tried to illegally cross the road at last night's crit. Cries of "stupid woman" rang out from the section of the London crowd who witnessed the incident.

Dame Sarah Storey set out on the Croydon round of the Matrix Fitness Grand Prix in London last night looking for race action.

But she got a lot more than she bargained for, as the video below reveals.

Riding for Pearl Izumi Sports Tours International; as she rounded a tight left hander at speed she found a child and a woman in the road and collided with them.

The woman, who may have been the child’s grandmother, had somehow walked onto the course with the boy, despite the presence of crowd control barriers to keep riders and spectators apart.

There were designated crossing points, but not at the spot on the south London course where the incident occurred.

Other riders quickly charge around the same corner but manage to avoid hitting Storey or the stricken woman and child.

Storey was attacking at the time and while she was held up for a prolonged priod, the Paralympic champion was able to remount and claim 10th on the night.

“Had nowhere to go and ended up hitting them but worse was the woman shoved her boy towards me when he was trying to run for safety,” she later said on Twitter.

The child and woman were both knocked to the ground but thankfully they were not seriously injured.

As all three were in a heap on the road, other riders rounded the bend. But despite almost hitting the crash victims, they managed not to do so.

The child seemed terrified and was crying; his anxiety not helped by the sight of the other riders hurtling towards him.

And to make matters worse, a younger woman - who was perhaps the child’s mother - ran across the road just seconds after the smash and as the field was still filtering by in ones and twos.
