Matej Mohorič has been forced out of the CRO Race (2.1)
in Croatia after a freak crash at the end of stage 2 today.
The riders had just come over the finish line in Zadar
when a spectator ran out onto the road.
A clutch of riders contesting 2nd place just behind stage
winner and now overall leader Eduard-Michael Grosu (Delko Marseille Provence) were going too fast to avoid him.
As the spectator ran up the road in the same direction as
the riders, one of them hit him. The spectator and at least four other riders
fell.
As well as Mohorič (Bahrain Merida), who was 7th on the
stage and sitting 5th overall, Alex Edmondson (Mitchelton-Scott) also feel hard, after placing 3rd on the stage.
Mattia Frapporti (Androni Giocattoli-Sidermec) and Cyril
Gautier (Total Direct Énergie) also came down; Gautier’s third crash of the
stage.
Mohorič appears to have been worst effected and was taken
to hospital, where two fracture ribs were diagnosed as well as a collapsed
lung, among other injuries.
