This video captures a sad day for the Tour de France; a spectator spitting at the race leader Chris Froome as he chases alone on the final climb.
TV footage has emerged of a spectator by the roadside on the Tour de France spitting at race leader Chris Froome.
The attack, in the footage below, occurred on the final climb of Friday's stage 19 and follows an earlier incident during which Froome had a cup of urine thrown at him.
The Team Sky man was chasing Nairo Quintana (Movistar) up La Toussuire to the summit finish when the fan steps out into the road and Froome passes and spits.
The Briton, who lost 30 seconds on the climb to Quintana but still leads him by 2:38, was said to be upset at the finish after what had taken place.
He had urine thrown at him on stage 14 and a number of his team mates have also been verbally abused, with Richie Porte claiming he was thumped.
Nicolas Roche told stickybottle in recent days the whole team had been verbally abused and insulted and that some of them had been spat at amid continuing accusations and innuendo of doping.
“We’re dealing with a lot of accusations,” Roche said.
“French TV and the media were quick to jump to conclusions and they’ve done a lot of harm. Fans were very aggressive; we’ve been booed and insulted.
“Luke Rowe and Richie (Porte) were spat at; it’s not only Froomey but the entire team, every one of us.
“Even the last rider who was in the grupetto 25 minutes behind (has been targetted). It’s not great to be treated with such disrespect.”
