He’s speaking to Cycling Weekly for its ‘show us your scars’ segment in which pros and former pros talk us through the worse knocks they’ve sustained on their bikes.
“Well, I’ve a lot of scars from my cycling career; I think you could say ’scarred’ for life,” a clear in-form Kelly starts is poolside interview with Cycling Weekly.
He pulls up his tracksuit bottoms to reveal one scar sustain in the Tour of Switzerland early in his career when he was dropped on a climb and during his chase back on came off at speeds of up to 80kmph.
“It was a bit scary but you recover after a while and you’re back to the same tricks very quickly,” he said after explain the somewhat hairy encounter.
He explains his collar bone breaks, revealing the scars; having broken a collar bone three times.
He said he felt lucky because none of the broken bones or other crash injuries had resulted in any long term damage to his health, mobility of general welfare post-retirement.
