The Orica-Scott pair hit the front but Sam Bennett and Rüdiger Selig are on their way; great stuff.

The final of today’s stage 7 of the Giro d’Italia was absolutely fantastic, even if the twisty finishing straight wasn’t the race organiser’s smartest move.

It came down to a battle between Ireland’s Sam Bennett (Bora-hansgrohe), Australian Caleb Ewan (Orica-Scott) and Colombian Fernando Gaviria (QuickStep).

At this level it’s all about the victory. The three leading men knew it and so did their team mates.

First to start throwing their weight around were QuickStep, with plenty of barging going on as Bennett’s team mate Lukas Postlberger led out the bunch.

As the Austrian stage 1 winner pulled over, it was Orica-Scott that hit the front; Luka Mezgec leading out Ewan.

But just as Mezgec hit the front, Bennett’s team mate Rüdiger Selig moves up with the Irishman on his wheel.

And it’s Mezgec and Selig sprinting side by side for a moment.

The German Selig uses his elbow to move Mezgec to the side ever so slightly so there’s room on the inside for Bennett to do his thing.

Ewan was first to pull the trigger, Bennett was next but just failed to get him back. And then Gaviria finished really fast to get between the two of them for 2nd place.

It’s all in the videos below; well a watch a couple of times because this is sprinting at its best.

Watch out for the reasonable and perfectly legal left elbow of Selig...
