Video: Sam Bennett crashes hard in sprint pile-up in Belgium

A visibly injured Sam Bennett looks pretty pissed as he limps over the finish line after a major crash in Belgium.

After a tricky early section of the season when he felt the ill effects of over training, Sam Bennett was among the fallers in a late crash at the Tour of Belgium on Thursday.

The major crash as the race hurtled towards the finishing sprint took down a number of men who would have been in contention at the end of stage 1 from Buggenhout to Knokke-Heist.

The stage was won by Edward Theuns of Trek-Segafredo who stormed in ahead of runner-up Dan McLay (Fortuneo-Vital Concept) with Kenny De Haes (Wanty-Groupe Gobert) rounding out the podium.

The honours were decided in a sprint after an early breakaway was brought back with about 18km remaining.

And while Bennett would have been one of the favourites to add another victory to his stage win at the Critérium International last month, it was not to be.

He was able to get back onto his bike after the crash inside the last 2km.

He eventually limped across the line meaning he is still in the race for the remaining three stages.

But his crash coming with just over a month to the Tour de France will hopefully be the last of the testing experiences sent to try him so far this season.

Wout Van Aert (Crelan-Vastgoedservice) won yesterday’s prologue TT in Belgium from Tony Martin (Etixx-Quickstep) and he continues in the race lead, by two seconds, from the German.

Bennett was 77th in the 6km opening TT in Beveren, some 27 seconds down.
