Irish rider Sam Bennett caught up in a crash. It ruined any chance he had of trying for a stage win on a finish that may have suited him.
Sam Bennett was left frustrated at the end of stage 4 of UAE Tour today after a crash ruined his chances.
The incident occurred with about 7km remaining on the stage. Bennett didn't fall but he was held up in the incident.
Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) was beside him and managed to get back onto the peloton. The world champion even took 8th on the stage.
However, many of the others impacted by the pile-up did not feature in the finale and lost time.
That group include Bennett and also French climber David Gaudu. The Groupama-FDJ rider was 3rd overall this morning and led the best young rider classification.
It was a day of drama even before the late fall on the 197km stage from Palm Jumeirah to Hatta Dam.
The peloton split in the crosswinds and even Dan Martin (UAE Team Emirates) found himself off the back in a group, though it got back on.
Remco Evenepoel (Deceuninck-QuickStep) also crashed and was forced out of the race with about 85km remaining.
Caleb Ewan (Lotto-Soudal) won the stage; proving best on the final climb that can suit sprinters and climbers alike.
More to follow.
