Peter Sagan on the ground after crashing hard at the Tour of Flanders. He also took down Greg Van Avermaet and Naesen.

Peter Sagan (Bora-hansgrohe) has seen his hopes of Tour of Flanders victory disappear with a crash on a section of cobbles with 17km remaining.

The world champion was leading a quality chasing group after lone leader at the time Philippe Gilbert (QuickStep) at the time.

He was hugging the verge, apparently in a bid to get the smoothest line. But he seemed to hit a canvas advertising hoarding and was taken down.

He fell very hard and took Greg Van Avermaet (BMC) and Oliver Naesen (Ag2r-La Mondiale).

Sagan's bike was not rideable after the incident and both he and Naesen seemed to take the brunt if the crash and looked quite shock.

Van Avermaet was up and going quickest and got back into the small chase group just under one minute down on the flying Gilbert.

A fans jacket was also caught in Sagan's bike and it appeared that it may have caused the crash though the hoarding seems to have been to blame.
