Sacha Modolo (EF-Drapac) no sooner had his hands of the handlebars for a victory salute than he was back in the saddle with that sinking feeling.
The 30-year-old Italian had sprinted in at the end of the opening stage of the Ruta del Sol.
But his celebration at the end of 197.6km in Granada proved premature. And Thomas Boudat (Direct Energie) darted in to pick his pockets.
Modolo was forced to settled for 2nd place on the day and the general classification.
"I saw the sprint from the helicopter TV shot afterwards, and initially I didn't understand how I could have lost this sprint," he said.
"I looked round after I crossed the line and saw there wasn't anybody near me but there was no one. Of course I didn't realise Boudat was on the far side of the road.
"I have to thank my colleagues for their amazing work, they did a brilliant job. It was a very close thing.”
