Video: RSA begins promoting segregated cycle lanes for Ireland (we think)

An astounding video from the Road Safety Authority given their record...

From the people who've brought us many winters of hi-vis vests as the answer to protecting cyclists on the streets, and who panned all cyclists in the media, now comes something that actually promotes better cycling infrastructure for Ireland.

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) has shared a video about the positive impact of segregated cycle lanes on the number of cycling trips taken by people in Seville.

"Seville is similar to Dublin in size and population... but it has over 100km of dedicated and segregated cycle tracks," its message says.

"Prior to 2006 though there was virtually no cycling infrastructure in the city but now bike use has increased from 10,000 cycle trips per day to 70,000 trips."

We know, it's pretty pathetic to be grateful for the RSA simply sharing a video with a positive message about cycling.

But this is an agency that brought us the infamous busy bees column in the Irish Independent.

It's also the same organisation that attended the Velo City conference in Dublin last June, where some of the best policy makers and most progressive international policies were on show, yet the RSA's only comment from the event was about helmets and hi-vis; see tweet below.

Against that background, the latest video from RSA - especially as it implies the progressive cycling policies of Continental Europe could be applied in Ireland - is a huge step forward.

A video isn't infrastructure, of course, but maybe this is the start of something better from the RSA.
