Irish professional Nicolas Roche said he is “perfectly okay” with playing the domestique roll — if needs be — for his new team Saxo-Tinkoff.
The former Ag2r La Mondiale team leader acknowledges that come the Tour de France he will ride for Alberto Contador if both are selected, but also said he should get chances of his own when the Spaniard is not in the same race.
“I knew Contador was here before I came and I’m perfectly okay with that,” the 28-year-old said.
“Hopefully I’ll have different roles at different times of the year at different races. Obviously when Alberto will be there I’ll be riding for him but when he’s not there hopefully I’ll have the chance to race for myself. That of course depends on how I’m going because there are a lot of strong riders on the team.”
Roche made his comments in a promo video for his new team in which he and Australian team mate Michael Rogers visit Saxo Bank’s HQ – we’ve included the video below.
