Nacer Bouhanni came down hard in a huge high-speed sprint finish crash today, with his brother among those who got in a fight after the stage.
Having won yesterday’s opening stage of the Tour du Poitou Charentes (UCI 2.1) in France, Nacer Bouhanni has come down in a massive crash during the sprint to the finish line at the end of today’s second stage.
The Cofidis rider managed to pick himself up and walked over the line after a period, but some of the other fallers also looked badly injured.
Immediately after the finish a number of riders from different teams clashed, with Bouhanni’s young brother Rayane – who also rides for Cofidis – in the thick of that action.
The stage was won by Tom Van Asbroeck (LottoNL-Jumbo) from Manuel Belletti (Wilier Triestina-Southeast) and Marco Benfatto (Androni Giocattoli–Sidermec).
Van Asbroeck took the race lead from Bouhanni after the 179.8km stage from La Rochelle to Niort.
The only Irish rider in the five-stage race, Philip Deignan of Team Sky came home in 88th place, 46 seconds down on the winner.
Losing the chance to win another stage and also giving up the race lead was a big blow in an eventful few days for Bouhanni.
He was relegated in Hamburg at the weekend for irregular sprinting when he thought he had won the Cyclassics Hamburg (1.UWT).
