Former champion Kristian House ploughed into a photographer head on, sending him crashing to the ground. He then went to confront him.
The British national road race championships turned out to be a fantastic contest in Lincoln on Sunday, but viewers watching the event live on British Eurosport would have winced every time the riders hit the cobbled climb.
The infamous Michaelgate ascent is very narrow and even though the roadsides were packed with spectators, as per expectations, most of the climb was not lined with crowd control barriers.
It meant as the riders snaked up the hill trying to hug the couple of inches of smooth road surface in the gutter they came perilously close with every pedal stroked to colliding with those in the crowd.
Mark Cavendish of Etixx-Quick Step put in fantastic ride to claim silver behind Peter Kennaugh; the Team Sky rider defending in some style the title he won last year.
But Cavendish complained of injuring his arm when he hit somebody in the crowd.

This is gonna hurt! Thankfully the smash didn't seem to do photographer or rider any major physical harm.
And former champion Kristian House of JLT Condor rode at some speed right into a photographer who had stepped into the road to take shots of the riders coming up the climb.
As can be seen in the footage below, the collision really was head-on; though House escaped injury when he landed on his feet.
He momentarily went back to confront the photographer, before being encouraged by fans to get back on his bike and back into the group.
The photographer, who was looking through the lens at the moment of impact, obviously had his vision distorted by the camera.
It would have made House appear a few yards further away than he really was.
So if you’re out at any races this summer taking photos, please be warned!
House said afterwards: "Thanks to everyone cheering for me over the weekend, and for all the comments on how bad the photographer stepping out was.
"To the guy who decided to stand in the road while I was riding rather quickly up the hill; I hope you got the shot and I didn't ruin your lens... much."
