Video: Rider left hanging off bridge as US bike race goes wrong fast

A spectacular crash captured in this video saw one of the riders left clinging to a bridge for dear life after the speed of crashing saw him and his bike thrown over the side.

A cycling club in the US has said one of its riders was lucky to be alive when left hanging from a bridge after a sprint he was in went badly wrong.

The finish of the category 3 Santa Barbara County Road Race was in full throttle for the finish line up the road when a crash occurred during the sprint.

One of the riders had front and back facing cameras mounted on his bike and captured what can only be described as spectacular footage, below.

Peter Aquino, the rider whose camera filmed what happened, managed to stay upright and went on to take 23rd in the event.

But Mike Allec of the Carefast-Storck Cycling Team was trying to avoid crashed riders ahead of him when he came off his bike right beside a concrete wall.

Mike Allec's bike was thrown over the side and down onto the dried out earth below, though his reflexes saw him hang on.

It turns out the riders were on a bridge over a ravine with a 30ft drop below them. And at the particular spot when Allec, from Fullerton in California, has left dangling would have seen him plunged into a complete dried out section of creak.

But even though he was mid crash, he managed to hang onto the side of the wall and avoid the drop below.

His team took to Facebook to explain what had happened: “This weekend at the Santa Barbara Road Race our team rider and manager Mike Allec was involved in a spectacular crash in the final sprint that left him hanging off of a bridge above a ravine (30ft below).

“We are very thankful for the outpouring support from many who were there and more importantly those that helped him off of the bridge.

“Words cannot express the gratitude for him being able to walk away from this with road rash; this could have ended much, much worse.

“Thank you Peter Aquino for the video and to all of the personnel on site including local emergency crews. Be safe out there!”
