The red mist descended mid stage after a high speed crash and both riders involved found themselves disqualified.
Tempers have flared and ugly scenes emerged at the Vuelta a Costa Rica when one of the riders launched an attack on a rival mid stage.
Both riders had crashed in the middle of the bunch and Gabriel Marín (Nestlé Giant) was clearly incensed at rival Dylan Castillo (Team Costa Fruit) whom he blamed for the spill.
While clearly in pain and with the bunch gone hurtling up the road the red mist descended when he saw Castillo approach on his bike.
He ran at him and kicked him several times, with officials and moto riders forced to intervene to pull the two men apart.
The incident occurred with cameras recording and under the commissaire's nose, with Marín (22) disqualified from the race on the spot.
He was left to sit on the pavement with blood coming from his leg and reflecting on a moment of madness that had cost him his place on the race.
And while Castillo continued on his way, he too was disqualified when video was reviewed later.
Bryan Salas (Scott-TeleUno-BCT) claimed victory at end of the eventful stage 4 with Daniel Jara (Team Colono) leading the UCI 2.2 event overall.
