Video: Pro rider in head-on near-miss with driver while descending

Marco Mathis was forced to correct his line as a motorist came up the hill towards him

Marco Mathis (Cofidis) has apologised for a near-miss he was involved in with an on-coming motorist while out training.

He was descending at an undisclosed location as Rick Zabel (Israel Cycling Academy) was behind him with his on-bike camera rolling.

As Mathias veered over to the wrong side of the road on the descent, a motorist in a car appeared coming towards him on a sweeping bend.

Luckily Mathis was able to correct his line and prevent a crash between himself and the driver.

However, when the footage was shared by Zabel on Instagram, below, Mathis was soon taking to social media himself to apologise.

"In a right corner I used my (entire) space on the road," Mathis wrote in a message shared by Cofidis. "In this moment it looked closer than it was.

"But I want to say sorry to the driver of the car (who) may have been frightened. And I want to recommend you (not) take too much risk in training. So enjoy your next ride."
