Fabio Felline (Trek-Segafredo) broke his nose and sustained facial injuries when he reached towards his front wheel in the neutralised zone of Amstel Gold. You can see his hand caught between his spokes and the inside of his fork in this photo.
Fabio Felline of the Trek-Segafredo team was forced to abandon Amstel Gold in the neutralised section after this very unfortunate incident.
The Italian seemed reach his left hand towards his front wheel when it got caught in the spokes and threw him over the handlebars.
Even though the racing proper had not begun, the riders were moving out at a decent enough speed and so he planted the ground head first with some force.
It’s unclear what he was trying to do when reaching towards his front wheel.
But he may have been running his gloved hand over his front wheel to flick off any broken glass or other forms or road debris that might cause a puncture.
It’s also possible we was tweaking his front brake or trying to remove something that became caught on the front end of the bike.
Whatever the reason for having his hand anywhere near the wheel, he broke his nose in impact and suffered facial injuries, according to his team.
