Richie Porte crashes out of Tour de France on stage 9
Richie Porte has crashed out of the Tour de France on stage 9 on Sunday. The Australian went down in a spill just 10km into the race.
While the riders were set to face 15 sectors of pave on the road too Roubaix today, Portes crash occurred before the first of the cobbles were reached.
Riding for BMC Racing, he was regarded as the most likely to put it up to Chris Froome (Team Sky) and potentially beat him.
Porte also crashed out of the race last year; falling on a descent on stage 8 and taking Dan Martin down with him.
His team said in a brief statement: “We can confirm that Richie Porte is on his way to hospital for examination.
“No one could have imagined this is the way stage 9 would have started. But we still have seven riders in the race and we are behind them 100 per cent of the way.”
One of those riders is yellow jersey Greg Van Avermaet who is also one of the tipped riders for today’s stage.
