As Philippe Gilbert seemed beaten but battled to win, the TV cameras stayed on his brother. The poor man looked shattered and then exploded.

Philippe Gilbert (Quick-Step) has continued his great season with victory in Amstel Gold.

The cameras stayed on his brother as the dramatic win was unfolding. And you can see in the clip below he was put through the emotional ringer in the last seconds of the race.

The Belgian national champion, who won the Tour of Flanders two weeks ago, won today in a two-up sprint with Michal Kwiatkowski (Team Sky).

The removal of the Cauberg climb from the end of the race resulted in much more open and attacking racing.

A nerve-wracking finish followed, with the pair playing cat and mouse and freewheeling at times in the final kilometre.

A thrilling Amstel finish

Kwiatkowski hung back off Gilbert and when the Belgian was looking straight ahead, the Pole made his move.

He looked to have it won but into the headwind Philippe Gilbert somehow battled onto his rear wheel.

He then got passed him to take his fourth win in the race; a record in the Ardennes monument.

Dan Martin was the sole Irish rider in the race. While he loves the Ardennes classics, he was well below par. And having struggled throughout he was a non finisher.
