A badly parked car has caused chaos at the Tour of Britain, with riders hitting it as they exited a corner.

The incident occurred on today’s stage 4; some 164.7km from Mansfield to Newark-on-Trent.

With just under 46km remaining, the peloton came around a left hand corner and several riders hit the back of the parked vehicle.

It was parked by the side of the road, to the right, and was in the riders’ path as they exited the turn.

The rear windscreen of the vehicle was smashed on impact.

US rider Brent Bookwalter (BMC Racing) was forced out of the race. He appeared to have sustained the worst injuries in hitting the vehicle.

At the finish line it was Fernando Gaviria (QuickStep) who took the bunch sprint. He won from Elia Viviani (Team Sky) and Alexander Kristoff (Katusha Alpecin).

All five Irish riders in the Tour of Britain finished in the bunch. Ryan Mullen (Cannondale-Drapac) was 22nd and Matt Teggart (An Post-Chainreaction) 50th.

Dan Martin (QuickStep) was 61st while Sean McKenna and Damien Shaw, both of An Post-Chainreaction, were 90th and 96th.

Teggart, Mullen and Martin are now all in a group of riders equal on time, some 20 seconds down on race leader Viviani.

The only time gained by any of the riders to date has come by way of sprint time bonuses.

It means it’s all to play for on tomorrow’s 16.2km pan plat TT in Tendring. Of the Irish riders that will suit Ryan Mullen best.

The Irish road and TT champion would dearly love a win. He would probably go into the race lead if he could pull it off though there are other top quality testers in the field.
