Video: On-board video and live data shows brutality of hill climbs

Hill climbs are generally a short effort, but the on-board camera with live data - including these aftermath images - show just how brutal they can be.

Here's a really interesting little piece on a club rider from the UK riding the British Hill Climb Championships last weekend.

Courtney Blockley-Campton didn’t win the event but he put in a very decent ride to take 29th spot, 20 seconds down on the winner.

That's a very respectable ride in the championships of a nation with a strong tradition of hill climb racing.

Riding for Lutterworth Cycle Centre he clocked 2mins 37.5ses for the 834metre race on Bank Road in Derbyshire.

The race may not have been the longest in the world but it was brutal, with an average gradient of 14 per cent and a maximum of 20 per cent.

The on-board footage, below, has been posted on the rider’s Facebook page.

It gives an interesting insight into the power he generates and his heart rate, not to mention the aftermath when he had to be helped to a sitting position on the road after his effort.

There’s also a great atmosphere as you can see from the crowd. Wouldn’t it be great to get even a month of hill climbs organised in Ireland at the end of the road season?
