Video: New footage shows Sagan sharply changed line before moto crash

Peter Sagan lands on his back and neck after being hit from behind by a moto. New footage shows he sharply changed line before being hit.

New footage of the stage 8 Vuelta crash in which Peter Sagan was struck by a motorbike overtaking the peloton shows the rider sharply changed direction just moments before the crash.

The footage, below, shows a small breakaway off the front and just behind a lone rider has a gap of a couple of lengths at the head of the peloton.

Sagan is the first rider in the bunch, and swings off to his left in an apparent effort to get off the front and encourage others to come through.

He was forced off the race and his team was irate, calling on the Vuelta to improve safety.

The new footage – in the first clip below - perhaps puts a different complexion on the incident, though his team will point out that the riders expect to be racing on closed roads and that Sagan was still hit from behind.

The Slovak riding for Tinkoff-Saxo was in the thick of the action with 8km remaining of the 182.5km stage 8 from Puebla de Don Fabrique to Murcia.

When he was hit, Sagan was thrown off his bike and up into the air, landing hard as the photo above suggests.

He struggled to his feet and limped home in 64th position, some 5:27 down on Jasper Stuyven (Trek Factory Racing) who won the bunch sprint after a day of drama.

But before he remounted, his shorts almost completely ripped from his left thigh, Sagan gave everyone around him a piece of his mind, as the second video below reveals.

He got to his feet and when the medic's car pulled in beside him to check if he was OK, an irate Sagan punched the vehicle.

He then engaged in what looked like a very angry verbal exchange with a moto rider who was also stopped at the scene, before kicking the motorbike.

And still steaming from his spill, on a day when he may well have won the stage, he gave his own bike a massive kick.

Though he finished the stage, the burn road rash injuries he sustained, meant he was a non starter the following day and was fined for his outburst.

Sagan eyeballs a moto driver hard in an exchange that saw him kick the moto, the white medic’s car to the right of shot and his own bike.

In for a penny, in for a pound; Sagan gives his own bike a good kicking as his frustration erupts.

Sagan was irate and was still fuming when the medic's car caught up with him to check his condition.
