Video: Nasty crash in sprint for climbers' points at Giro d'Italia

Placing this king of the mountains prime on a sharp bend backfired spectacularly with a nasty crash on the Giro.

We’re well used to seeing crashes in major races during bunch sprints or in the build-up to them.

Less common is a sprinting crash at the top of a climb as the riders battle for king of mountains points.

But that’s exactly what happened today during stage 13 of the Giro.

Giovanni Visconti (Movistar) was doing battle with Damiano Cunego (Nippo-Vini Fantini) at the top of a cat 2 climb when things took a turn for the worse.

At the top of the climb the climbers’ prime line was painted across the line on a sharp right turn.

Added to the usual location of the line, there were people standing out on the road right on the corner.

And with both men looking for the fastest route to the line to take points, Visconti got came around the outside of Cunego.

And perhaps pushing too hard through the turn he came off, with Cunego very nearly following him.

Check out where the Tinkoff team helped chooses to stand in this clip; crazy.
