Video | Moped raiders snatch €5,000 racing bike from owner at coffee stop

The raiders casually pulled in on their moped and stole the bike in what appeared to be a knifepoint atttack

Two cyclists were left in shock after one of their bikes - a Trek Madone worth over €5,000 - was stolen as they were drinking coffee outside a café during a bike ride. The bike was simply wrench away from them.

Two raiders on a moped pulled up to the kerb, with one grabbing the bike and throwing it over his shoulder before being driven away by his accomplice.

The incident occurred outside Bartons coffee shop in Bermondsey, south east London. It appeared the raider who got off the moped and took the bike was armed with a knife.

He went to reach for a weapon - certainly giving the impression he had one - several times during the incident, which lasted just a matter of seconds.

The two cyclists were sat on benches outside the café having a coffee after riding the first 25km of their spin on Friday morning at about 11am. The thieves on the moped, who seemed to be circling the area, spotted the bike and simply took it from the cyclists, under threat.

The cyclists can be seen backing away, with the male cyclist looking like he believed the man taking the bike was armed, though it was not absolutely clear from this footage.

'I'm just shocked," said the bike's owner, Onar Cranny (26), from Delaware in the US. She only had the bike five days before it was stolen during the brazen crime.

"Obviously I know people will steal bikes when they're locked up or someone's not with the bike but to be getting ready to get back on and have someone come up, it was just like, wait, what? I was literally just about to get on the bike. It all happened so fast."

The man Cranny was with, Canadian Patrick Archer, told the British media he believed the raider who took the bike flashed a knife at him. At that point, fearing for his safety, Archer backed off and the bike was taken away.

The police were called and though four officers soon arrived on the scene, they were not the 999 responders. Instead, they were simply calling to the café to buy coffees and knew nothing of what had just taken place.

When the responding police officers finally arrived, it was more than an hour after the robbery had taken place and the raiders were long gone with the stolen bike.
