He won't forget this one in a hurry because his team mates won't let him forget it. But for the big bold celebration it wouldn't have been that bad...
He put in a brilliant high speed attack at the last, overhauling the breakaway in the final kilometre to win, and celebrate, in some style.
Only he didn't.
Yep; spare a thought for poor old Matej Mohoric of Bahrain-Merida.
The 23-year-old Slovenian thought he was taking his second win of the year at the Volta Catalunya yesterday.
He was in the reduced peloton as it flew down the final climb into the finish. He spotted what he thought were the last of the breakaway men just up the road and coming into sight.
And though the bunch was hitting 80km per hour, he risked it all and got away from them.
He then caught those just ahead and passed them, arriving at the finish line and punching the air with gusto.
The only problem was that 10 seconds up the road Jarlinson Pantano (Trek Segafredo) had just beaten Vegard Stake Laengen (UAE Team Emirates) for victory.
They'd ridden clear of the breakaway and were the only two riders not to be caught by Mohoric, meaning he was only going for 3rd place after all.
We bet he got a bit of stick last night for this one....
