Video: Martin on his Olympic hopes, big mistake at London 2012

Dan Martin looking lean and mean in Rio. He says he's ready for a crack at the Olympic road race, adding he had learned his lesson from sitting back too much in London four years ago.

Dan Martin has landed in Rio for the Olympic Games and says while he is feeling tired and heavy legged after the Tour de France and the Clasica Ciclista San Sebastian last Saturday, he has had the ideal preparation ahead of Saturday’s road race in Brazil.

“It gives you that strength you’re going to need on Saturday,” he said of having ridden the Tour.

While the level of fatigue was “immense”, the intensity of the Tour simply could not be replicated in training.

He said Saturday’s race in Brazil was very difficult to read but he felt it was a course that, on paper, really suited him though he was yet to ride it or see it for himself.

“It’s a case of having good legs on the day but also getting lucky and making the right moves and hopefully it works out.”

He added he had won the hilliest one-day races in pro cycling and will be marked on Saturday.

“I’m definitely starting as one of the favourites,” he said, adding he sat back too much in London four years ago but is more experienced now.
