Video: Look how fast Brad Wiggins passes club rider in local TT

Club rider Andy Birdsall was doing 38mph when world champion Bradley Wiggins passed him like he was stopped in an English 10 mile TT.

The arena was the City RC Hull Open 10 mile Time Trial in England.

The riders facing off; world time trial champion and the first British rider to win the Tour de France Bradley Wiggins and electronics sales man Andy Birdsall from Tickhill Velo Club.

Wiggins was riding the local UK event in the hope of setting a new record for the 10 mile TT mark as he prepares for his world hour record attempt next month.

Birdsall was his one-minute man and had the foresight to stick a camera on his bike to record Wiggins passing him.

The speed difference between club rider and world pro champ is quite staggering, especially since Birdsall said he was doing 38mph at the time.

In fact, the club rider estimated Wiggins may have been going as fast as 50mph when he stormed passed.

"Even knowing Brad was chasing me down from the start it made no difference to me," Birdsall said after the event.

"He had a record time to beat or course record at least. I had my own time to work towards so I was focused on that.

"When he came past me I was doing 38mph and I didn't attempt to change my tempo at all; stick to the plan.

"It was an amazing experience to be passed by the fastest man in the world."

Birdsall managed to hold Wiggins off until 4:20 into his ride and clocked a personal best of 24:52 in the process.

Wiggins clocked 17:58; enough to win the £50 first prize but well short of the 10 TT record of 17:20 set by Alex Dowsett (Movistar).
