Video: Lance Armstrong leads memorial for 5 cyclists killed in US

Lance Armstrong has led the memorial ride for the five cyclists killed in Michigan last week. Seen here addressing the hundreds of cyclists who turned out to completed the training ride the Chain Gang group never got to complete.

Lance Armstrong has been front and centre at a memorial event that paid tribute to the five cyclists killed in Michigan last week when their training ride was hit from behind by a man driving a pick-up truck.

The collision, which is one of the worst involving cyclists in US history, saw five killed and four badly injured when the local group of veteran riders was out for its regular Tuesday night 28-mile spin near Cooper Township, Kalamazoo.

The memorial event was held so the local cycling community could gather to grieve for the dead and to complete the bike ride they never got to finish.

“We’ve all had cars come just a little too close and it scares you,” Armstrong told a crowd at the Kalamazoo County Health and Community Services car park where the riders met up.

“We all know that, but none of us knew this. Over the years, there have been tragedies and incidents but nothing to this level.

"As I told Steve (Johnson, of Johnson Cycle Works) and his group earlier, thank you for letting me come. I know that I’m not for everybody, but this one touched home.

“(Don't) let this tragedy stop y’all. Just get back on the bike. And we’ll finish the ride for those fallen, and we’ll finish the ride for those in the hospital who can’t be here.”
