Video: It's raising big money but would you wear one of these?

It would never catch on for racing or training, but might these be the answer for keeping your casual or working clothing dry when the heavens open during a commute?

It's easily dismissed on first viewing; a cycling poncho, or Boncho. But this baby is raising some very decent money on crowdfunding site Kickstarter at present.

At the time of writing it had notched up £55,000, almost four times its goal of £15,000.

And with 15 days of fundraising remaining the product, by Dutch company VANMOOF, may do a lot better given its momentum so far.

The idea is a very simple one; a poncho rain jacket you wear while cycling to keep your upper body and legs dry.

Used with mudguards, the only part of you that might still get wet in heavy rain is your shoes and the bottoms of your trousers.

So what’s the trouble then? Well, you might feel you look like a bit of an idiot with one on.

The idea would be unsuitable for training, racing or sportives when you’ll have lycra on and a rain jacket meaning any further protection is unnecessary and cumbersome.

But this is one piece of kit that would be very handy during commutes.

When the heavens open but you still have to get to your destination in time and without getting soaked, you can whip this out of its foldaway bag and cover up in seconds.
