An Irish cycle safety group has let rip at the driver who recorded this clip. But is this guy a once off or part of a wider driving culture?
We hate to bring discomfort to your Sunday, but the actions and commentary of the driver who recorded this clip will very likely get on your nerves (and in your nerves and around your nerves).
The clip has clearly been recorded in the UK but the Irish cycle safety group Stayin' Alive at 1.5 - which campaigns for a safe passing distance of 1.5 metres - has taken up the clip.
It has shared the video on its Facebook page with the following message:
This video clip doing the rounds of social media is a good example of a type of road user out there.
Let's have a look. Here's just a few observations:
1. The driver sees nothing wrong with the alleged use of his mobile device when driving.
2. In the UK, there is no compulsion to cycle on cycle-paths; they are often not fit for purpose, badly maintained, full of glass and debris etc. Drivers need to understand this.
3. Cycling two abreast means handle bar to handle bar.
4. Hi-Vis and helmets are advisory, not compulsory.
When we see this type of clip, we are more and more convinced of the need to include cycling proficiency as part of the driving test.
The least this should be is a mandatory section in our theory test specific to vulnerable road users.
Too many take to the roads without even basic understanding of the actions of bicycle riders.
Let us know what you think; is this guy a boorish once off idiot? Or is there a wider group out there who think about cyclists like this?
What a fool this guy is
