Stephen Clancy talks about how the experience in the Dominican Republic has affected him and how he feels very lucky to have what he has.
Irish professional rider Stephen Clancy has spent much of the last fortnight on a team-building mission with his Novo-Nordisk squad in the Dominican Republic.
The 24-year old Limerick man was there working in disadvantaged communities with the rest of his teammates and staff members, building houses for a number of impoverished families.
The country, situated south east of Cuba, is one of the poorest in the Caribbean and the experience was humbling for Clancy.
“The reality of it all; seeing how other people are not as fortunate as us and to see how lucky we are; it gives us perspective," he said.
"It allows us learn from those experiences and appreciate what we have."
Clancy’s team is comprised entirely of diabetic riders whose mantra is to educate, empower and inspire people who suffer with the condition.
Their mission is to show that it doesn’t matter whether one has been afflicted by diabetes and they prove that by competing in some of the biggest races in the world.
Clancy himself was diagnosed at 19-years-old but has made huge progress in his three years with the team.
He is filmed in the clip below speaking about his experience in the Dominican Republic, a year after he did a similar project in Mexico.
Hats off to the Novo-Nordisk team and staff members who took part in such a meaningful and inspiring project.
