A new case has emerged in which a cyclist has used video footage against a driver and which resulted in the motorist being fined and issued with penalty points.
The cyclist, who publishes video on his @righttobikeit Twitter account, presented the video to gardai in April of last year, just after the incident took place on Carrogoline, Co Cork.
And in the past week he has been contacted by gardai and told the driver was fined €80 and also incurred three penalty points for this driving at a roundabout.
Such an outcome is, of course, not a crime as a driver is sanctioned rather than convicted and the matter does not end in the courts.
However, this video is a timely reminder than video footage can be used to pursue motorists for a range of issues if, when you are cycling, you feel a motorist has gotten too close for comfort or driven in an irresponsible manner.
While a specific offence of dangerously overtaking a cyclist was introduced last year, any example of careless or dangerous driving can be pursued via the Garda with self-recorded video footage.
