Michael O’Loughlin in the green of Ireland as the wheel of the first fall can be seen and everyone behind is about to get a rude awakening.
Michael O’Loughlin enjoyed a great ride in the U23 road race at the World Championships today, and was also very lucky to avoid a crash in the last few kilometres.
The Carrick-on-Suir man was in the day-long escape that was caught on the final lap with 10km remaining.
But as the bunch was strung out a little further up the road there was a high speed crash in which one rider hit the crowd control barriers and came down hard.
The men just behind ploughed into him and were on the tarmac dazed in a split second.
O’Loughlin was just head of the rider who fell and so stayed out of trouble, as the clip below shows.
We’ll have a full report later. Eddie Dunbar was best of the Irish in 49th.
Kristoffer Halvorsen of Norway won in a bunch sprint from Pascal Ackermann (Germany) and Jakub Mareczko (Italy).
