Have you ever encounter winds like this? This clip shows a race being blown to a stop, and then the riders are blown off their feet and struggle to hold onto their bikes.
We may have been hit by some very cold weather in Ireland with high winds and floods of late, but it hasn’t been sunshine all the way for riders in Spain either.
The clip below shows the field in the Volta a La Marina this week being blown so hard by hurricane force winds they came to a standstill.
But when the riders tried to stand on the road when stopped, the winds wouldn’t even let them do that.
Many of them were bent over trying to stay upright and others were simply blow over.
Those who managed to keep their keep planted on the road had trouble holding onto their bikes, some of which were being lifted off the ground by the breeze that would have carried them away.
Riders blown to a stop and off their feet
You quite often hear about competitors 'being blown away' in sport but it actually happened on Sunday to cyclists in Benidorm. Local Spanish media were reporting gusts of up to 90 mph. Cyclists, trees... even motorbikes were being blown sideways. The race had to be abandoned by organisers.
