The first stage of Vuelta a San Juan in Argentina has been marred by a major crash with just over 3km to the finish.

With the pace high coming towards the the end of the first race of the year for most of the riders a rub of wheels sent many crashing to the ground.

It looked like the incident started when one of the Cofidis riders went down and fell very awkwardly in the finale of the 163.5km stage into San Juan.

As the peloton was so tightly packed and traveling at such speed, a large number of riders came down; the crash starting near the front of the bunch adding to the carnage.
