Nairo Quintana (Arkéa Samsic) and Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-QuickStep) both suffered a significant setback on stage 2 of Paris-Nice today following a crash and a mechanical respectively.
Just inside the final 30km of the stage, as the crosswinds were blowing and the race was splitting up, Alaphilippe lost his place in the favourites' group due to an apparent puncture.
And a couple of kilometres further up the road Quintana came down in a crash.
Despite grabbing a bike and getting going again, the gap to those Quintana was with was very significant as the pace was on into the crosswinds.
They both lost 1:25 on the small front group that contested the victory, with Giacomo Nizzolo (NTT Pro Cycling) winning the stage and Maximilian Schachmann (Bora-hansgrohe) retaining the yellow jersey.
More to come.
