Video: How time bonuses on two stages scuppered Roche

The photo-finish shows Nicolas Roche came close to the stage win and overall victory at the Tour de Yorkshire.

Nicolas Roche looked the strongest in the final of stage 3 of the Tour de Yorkshire only to be beaten into Scarborough after 198km by Thomas Voeckler (Direct Energie).

Both Roche and the Frenchman had finished in the main bunch on stages 1 and 2 on Friday and Saturday.

However, while the Irish rider began the last stage equal on time with a group of men some 16 seconds down on race leader Dylan van Groenewegen (LottoNL-Jumbo), Voeckler was a little closer to the top of the general classification.

He trailed the Dutch leader by 14 seconds - two less than Roche - thanks to a time bonus he picked up mid stage on the opening day.

But when he pulled clear from the winning breakaway with Roche in the final yesterday - thanks to Roche's riding on the last climb - the scenario was pretty simply; whoever won the stage would win overall.

There were time bonuses - of 10, 6 and 4 seconds - on the finish line for the first three home.

It meant if Voeckler won he would claim the race overall by six seconds from Roche, who would take overall victory by two seconds if he won on the day.

In the end Voeckler got the jump on Roche to take the win, with the popular Irish rider 2nd on the stage and overall.
