Video: Headcam films moment club rider shot and wounded on spin
In an instant his leg stopped working and he was bent over his bike. A bullet was later founded lodged in his back.
Some very weird videos have emerged in recent years since the bike-mounted and helmetcams have become so popular, but this one takes the biscuits.
It features a club riding going smoothly, until one of the riders is shot and wounded.
Christopher Weiss was cycling in New Orleans with his buddies during a recent Saturday ride when he felt a pop in his back.
Initially it was simply a stinging pain but within a few seconds his leg stopped working.
He was bent over his bike by the roadside as he and those he was with tried to figure out what had just happened.
The 49-year-old just happened to be in a group that include a doctor.
But even with that expertise at his disposal, all involved thought the worst case scenario was that he’d been shot with a pellet or paintball gun.
However, when he was taken to hospital and examined a bullet from a gun was found lodged in his flesh near his spine.
While the local police believe it may have been a stray from a nearby shooting incident, Weiss believes he was injured about 15 minutes after the nearby shooting.
He told local media site nola.com he believed he might be the latest cyclists deliberately shot at as aggression towards cyclists mounts in the area.
“This is a pattern of escalation we’re seeing in New Orleans,” he said.
“The paintball shootings are on the rise, and it feels like a sniper situation. The public doesn’t care much about people on bikes—you can tell by the way people drive and the victim-blaming that happens in every article.
“If we let this slide, where will it end?” he said of his wounding.
“It could have been much more serious for me, but the path of the bullet didn’t hit any arteries or organs or my spine.”
