Andre Greipel and Fernando Gaviria get up close and personal; a little too close for the commissaires' liking.
Video Greipel Vs Gaviria Tour de France sprint scrap
Dylan Groenewegen (LottoNL-Jumbo) may have won his second Tour de France stage of 2018 today, but the final sprint was not without controversy.
The Dutch winner was away and won it well. But behind him; things were messier.
In the final kick to the line into Amiens, Andre Greipel (Lotto Soudal) and Fernando Gaviria (QuickStep) tangled.
Gaviria clearly wasn’t happy with being boxed in against the barriers by Greipel. And so he used his head to make his protest felt.
The young Colombian threw a headbutt – of the tactical variety, rather than any assault – to nudge the German out into the road and make room for himself.
Peter Sagan (Bora-hansgrohe) had opened the sprint. But he faded a little and crossed the line in 4th place.
Greipel was 2nd and Gaviria 3rd. But at the time of writing both riders had been declassified by the Tour commissaires.
Gaviria was declassified for the incident with Grepiel in the finishing sprint, in the video below.
And Grepiel was penalised for his involvement in another incident just inside the 1km to go marker.
He had made contact with Nikias Arndt (Team Sunweb) with his head and upper body in a way deemed to be unfair.
It meant Sagan jumped into 2nd place as Gaviria and Greipel were effectively moved out of the result.
That’s a significant development in the battle for the green jersey; Sagan pulling further ahead.
And having crossed the line in 5th place today, John Degenkolb (Trek-Segafredo) was moved up to 3rd on the stage.
From an Irish perspective, the stage was dominated by the news of Dan Martin’s crash.
The UAE Team Emirates ride, who had won so impressively 48 hours earlier, limped home 1:15 down.
You can read about that incident and see footage of Martin’s struggled back onto his bike by following this link.
