Michael O'Loughlin (Team Wiggins) was part of the four-man break on the penultimate stage of the Abu Dhabi Tour today. The Carrick teenager was up there with Greg Van Avermaet (BMC Racing Team), amongst others.
Michael O'Loughlin is enjoying a superb end to the 2016 season and after representing Ireland at the UCI World Road Championships in Doha last week he was enlisted for trade team duty a short hop away in Abu Dhabi.
He's in the 2.HC-ranked event and in amongst some very big names indeed, but isn't showing the slightest bit of trepidation or fear of getting stuck in.
A great man for the breakaway, he was at it again today when he got away in the opening kilometres of the 150-kilometre stage alongside Greg Van Avermaet of BMC Racing team, Marco Coledan of Trek Segafredo and Evgeny Shalunov (Gazprom-Rusvelo).
Team Sky spoiled their fun with 32 kilometres to go when they upped the ante in a bid to set up Nicolas Roche and the Irishman didn't disappoint, beating all but the stage winner and new race leader Tanel Kangert.
O'Loughlin was clearly gassed from his effort and he was spat out the back of the reduced front group and by the finish he lost over 12 minutes.
But it was still a serious ride by him yet again.
