Video: GoPro of lads riding Gran Fondo NI on Belfast rental bikes
The lads battled up the climbs, even had a beer along the way, and rode the full 173km while filming sections.
Some riders are glutens for punishment, and here’s a group who rode the Gran Fondo Giro d’Italia Northern Ireland on Belfast Bikes.
It took them 7hrs 48mins to ride the 173.2km Mourne Route, but they got there in the end.
The group consisted of Gavin Browne, David Fowler and Paul Hackett of Dave Kane Cycles on their Belfast bikes, along with their muscle and outrider John McKeown on his regular bike
Their buddies Johnny Maguire and John Topping drove a support vehicle with a spare Belfast bike, just in case they suffered a mechanical.
They had to average at least 25kph over the 173.km, which featured 2,700 metres of climbing.
Not only did they get around, they also shot GoPro footage and managed some “refreshments” while climbing.
“It was a tough day on the big climbs like Dree Hill,” Browne said of the 3.2km ascent.
“It had a 400 metre 15 per cent section in the middle. And we had Spelga Dam as well.
“But not one of us put a foot down on the climbs and we ended up passing a lot of riders. They were saying when we passed them they’d have to pack it in and put their bikes on eBay!”
It was all in the name of charity, with over £4,000 raised for Macmillan Cancer Support so far. If you feel like adding a few quid, here's the link you need.
