Video Giro cyclist throws bottle at car: He lashed out at the neutral service car. And he has now explained what happened.

Dutch rider Roy Curvers was lucky to avoid joining the list of riders disqualified from major races for throwing bottles at race cars.

However, the Team Sunweb rider has explained his  actions. And he says the car he threw the bottle at during stage 5 of the Giro on Wednesday had passed him far too closely.

The incident was caught by the TV cameras. Furthermore, it was played repeatedly on TV before being shared around on social media

With the riders under pressure with 15km remaining on the stage, Curvers was in the cavalcade.

He says he lashed out after the Shimano neutral service car passed him so closely he believed it touched him.

"You can shout and swear but they don't hear you in a car. I wanted to make it clear that I didn't like the driver's behaviour.”

And clear he did that by taking his bottle out of its cage and letting fly. It’s never a good idea.

Curvers continued: “They should always take the rider's safety into consideration. You react in this way in the heat of the moment."
